It would be a mistake to act today just as Jesus acted in the first century because Jesus belonged to a particular historical context, and that particular historical context is no longer ours. 1/5
We cannot deduce our way of proceeding from Jesus and the Bible alone. We must be free to respond to the exigencies of the present moment with the help of the Holy Spirit that Jesus bestowed on us. 2/5
We cannot, like the disciples after Jesus’ ascension, look to Jesus as the sole criterion for our way of proceeding. Jesus gave us a mission to build the Reign of God. Now, we have to do it. 3/5
When the Pharisees ask Jesus for a sign from heaven, Jesus tells them to discern the signs of the times themselves. So we cannot and should not, even by Jesus’ own direction, look to Jesus to solve every problem for us. We have to enter into maturity in the Spirit. 4/5
