We have a long way to go in our journey toward an equitable transportation network where all road users are safe, regardless of race, gender, religion, sexual orientation, physical ability, or socioeconomic status.
@NSCsafety has taken a thoughtful approach to describing the impacts of transportation inequities and how to address systemic disparities in road safety with this best practices framework. https://www.nsc.org/policy-statements?category=bda68d9c-274c-4e78-9e21-dee6a4b31566
GHSA especially commends @NSCsafety for acknowledging the important role of traffic enforcement and engagement, as well as steps that states and communities can take to ensure that these programs are implemented in an equitable way.
GHSA is supportive of efforts @NSCsafety outlined to promote community engagement in the development of traffic safety laws, identify solutions to laws and regulations that exacerbate existing systemic inequities,…
…assess alternative forms of enforcement such as automated cameras, improve data collection, and educate law enforcement about best practices and techniques.
Last September, GHSA recommended steps to fight racism and inequality in traffic enforcement, and we remain committed to road safety reforms that provide justice for individuals and communities affected by historical biases.
We look forward to continuing to be a part of this important conversation as we all work together to achieve safe roads for everybody.
