I've devoted my career to government ethics, and I'm about to start a new chapter in that career today. The past four years taught us how weak our government's anticorruption mechanisms are. Now we have an opportunity to do something about that. /1
I've never seen anything like the level of public engagement by our nation's citizens in response to overt corruption. We met a threat to democracy. We must keep that momentum going. We need accountability for government officials at all levels. We need meaningful reform. /2
I'm optimistic that this experience has taught us the value of participating in democracy. We have a responsibility to strengthen our republic, make it inclusive and demand better from our leaders. We can achieve these goals if we stay engaged and do the work. /3
Democracy is a struggle—not for the short term but for the rest of our lives. Let's do this work together. /4
