I know that the messages about self-care that come from school leaders are well-intentioned.

I really do.

But they bug me.
Here's why: There are very few subs available this year and classroom teachers know that --- so when we are mentally or physically shot, taking a day to recover isn't easy because there are kids to teach and no one to cover.
Here's another reason why: Everything that we are doing this year -- whether we are teaching in person, virtually or in some kind of hybrid model -- is different.

That means every lesson we teach, day after day, has to be modified.
That doesn't leave a lot of room for self-care.

When the rubber hits the road, self-care isn't really an option when every lesson every day needs to be rethought for today's circumstances and when there are no subs to cover classes in a pinch.
Don't get me wrong: I appreciate the sentiment. I'm glad people are thinking about my mental and physical health.

But it's easier to say "look after yourself" than it is to actually pull it off when you are teaching in a pandemic.
