Dearest Reader/Writer,

Being unpublished & searching for an agent/publisher is like being a Regency debutante trying to make an advantageous match, let me count the ways.

A thread. 1/13
In much the same way that a writer will draft and redraft their MS for querying, a debutante is groomed throughout their young life in preparation for their "joining" society. Do not attempt to skip this important step. Potential suitors will sniff out unpolished MSs easily. 2/13
Many emerging writer will "test" their work prior to the #amquerying stage by employing beta readers and critique partners. This is also true of the debutante whose mother or older sister/s have already made matches. 3/13
Other ways a writer may find advice/support include paying for edits or mentoring. Some may be fortunate/talented enough to be chosen for mentoring schemes.

Many debutantes without the benefit of family connections would be "sponsored" by an older woman in good standing. 4/13
Taking part in Twitter pitch contest or a mentoring event with an agent showcase at the end is the equivalent of being formally presented at court. Put your best foot forward and ensure your MS is polished & gleaming! 5/13
If you're one of the rare fortunate few, you'll be declared a Diamond of The First Water and your book will go to auction with at least six potential publishers/suitors vying for your match. 6/13
An agent or editor "like" on your Twitter pitch is like a suitor asking for a spot on your dance card. 7/13
A full MS request is a Gentleman Caller. Celebrate privately with your Mama/Sponsor/Writing Pals/Mentor, but a word of caution, Dear Debutante Writer: treat this suitor like every other until they propose a match. 8/13
Try not to be too disheartened by agent/editor suitor rejections. The ways in which Regency Debutantes were rejected were numerous and OH-SO SUBJECTIVE 😬 9/13
Be warned, for there are charlatans, schmagents, fakes and rakes a-plenty who may seek to cheat you and destroy your good reputation. 10/13
But matches do and can happen. However, not every one will be a "love match" leading to a long-lasting and happy relationship. If and when a potential suitor offers, ensure you take the time to consider all of your options. 11/13
If you are fortunate enough to find the perfect love match, rejoice! This is an occasion of much happiness and hope for us all. 12/13
Now, go add a little more rouge to your query & put your most ravishing gown on, Debutante Writer, for you shall go to the ball!

I hope you find your perfect Happily Ever After, as I did with @wenchlychumz @violetgazepress.

The End.
Oh, I forgot to add, you can always take a leaf out of Lady Whistledown's book and self-publish.

No idea how I've set this to "only followers can reply" and I can't seem to change it. Oh well. Good luck to everyone writing, drafting, querying or whatever stage you're at x
