IMPORTANT. This is not financial advice. I have no inside information.

I have a strong sense based on the timeline below, CBDC research and a recent article on crypto by Mastercard, that Mastercard is about to acquire Algorand.

Please see the timeline below.

Timeline: December 10, 2020 > OMFIF launches the future of payments report. Alongside the names of Mastercard and PayPal is one blockchain company: Algorand.

Mastercard is very clear on its direction: no volatile currencies, no $BTC, no $LTC, no $XMR, but stablecoins are the only reliable form of currency. The two largest stablecoins $USDT and $USDC have been deployed on Algorand.

Mastercard is clear on 4 criteria which need to be met: 1) privacy and security, 2) know your customers (banks) so no illegal activities supported, 3) follow local laws and regulations, and 4) usuable for payments. So this means CBDCs. Algorand currently has 16 live.

Mastercard states they are actively testing CBDCs partnering with governments. Testing is complex in large countries like e.g. China or the US. So if you would run an actual test you would run it somewhere controllable, in let’s say Marshall Islands.

Timeline: February 11, 2020 > The COO and CPO of Algorand are guests in the Blockchain Brad show. In the last ten minutes they mention it would be good to talk again in two months, they are having a hard time not to spoil a big announcement.

$ALGO
I believe the upcoming Algorand announcement is around Mastercard.

I also believe that Mastercard will desire to stay in full control of such a crucial process.

I therefore feel Mastercard will not partner with, but acquire Algorand.
