The Horsa pilot released the cable immediately, in the hope that the Whitley could pull out of the dive. It was not to be. Four of the crew died as the plane exploded and broke up on impact, Edward suffered horrendous burns but was still alive when villagers got to the site. /3
The crew of the glider all survived an emergency landing.
Edward died a few hours later in the field hospital to the west of Shrewsbury.
He was buried the following day in the @CWGC plot of Shrewsbury General Cemetery.
