As someone who has set aside time to work collaboratively with other student representatives, sector bodies and leaders to approach claims of limitations to free speech in a positive and progressive way - I’d like to hope the effort hasn’t gone to waste. /thread
We’ve admitted there might be a problem (albeit not the one everyone thinks there is) http://wonkhe.com/blogs/there-is-a-debate-about-free-speech-on-campus-just-not-the-one-you-think/
We’ve suggested, with a lot of background work from @Wonkhe, a pragmatic approach to ensuring that if there is a problem it’s dealt with. http://wonkhe.com/blogs-sus/freedom-of-speech-code/
We’ve worked hard, devoted time and acted in good faith; if others think there is a problem we will positively approach it and find a solution.
There’s also been some really interesting work from @HEPI_news . I wonder what the impact of news coverage has on student perceptions - universities and SUs might be the targets in the ‘war on woke’ but it’s students that get caught in the crossfire. https://twitter.com/hepi_news/status/1360860298756956164
I am hopelessly optimistic that @yusuprez @ExePresident @asamoahpeters @alwaysreviewing and I will be able to meet the new ‘Free Speech Champion’ in the coming weeks to discuss our work.
We will continually work to support students and hope that the @officestudents listens to - and recognises the work of - students on matters as important as Freedom of Speech.
