Next up: background on the jury + what they had to say
Ppl need to be at the heart of tackling the climate & nature emergencies

So @IPPR has been holding Citizens' Juries around the country - so local people can shape what they see as fair action

The Tees Valley & County Durham residents in their own words https://twitter.com/i/status/1361596329714147330
We brought together 23 citizens from all walks of life across Tees Valley and County Durham on how to tackle the climate & nature crisis fairly

After 20+ hrs of deliberations, the jurors have put forward principles to guide action & 30+ policy proposals

Their principles to guide action include:

📣 The public must be involved in decision-making
🤝 Non-partisan coordination
⬇️ More power devolved to the local level
👩‍🎓A big focus on education and public information
⚖️ There must be a big emphasis on fairness + equality
At the heart of their plan for addressing the climate and nature crises was the need to focus on improving people's lives.

Our jurors developed this framework, and argued that all action to address the climate & nature crises should help achieve these goals
Some of their key recommendations include:

1⃣The jurors called for citizens juries and deliberative processes in all local areas, funded by central government, so citizens can be involved in decision making and steering the transition
2⃣There should be more community ownership of local assets, so that citizens have more control over and a greater stake in the decisions that affect them
3⃣Carbon tax should be introduced but it should be incremental & targeted at those with the worst environmental impacts

This money should go exclusively towards
tackling the climate & nature crises & ring-fenced to support the transition locally
4⃣A big focus on education & skills to support the transition to a low-carbon economy. Including:

👩‍🎓Quality lifelong learning from apprenticeships to retraining
👷‍♀️A green job wage guarantee
📙An ‘Attenborough Scholarship’ – to encourage young people into low carbon jobs
5⃣Restoring and repairing nature and ensuring it's accessible to all

🦋Protect green spaces and wildlife
🌳Launch a national tree planting campaign
🥘Enable local, sustainable farming and food networks
It's been a real privilege to hold these juries, hear them share their experiences & to hear how passionate the public are about addressing the climate crisis & restore nature

Even more rewarding, is knowing how much the jurors have appreciated the process.
