Court of Augmentations fans rejoice! Item descriptions for the first ten pieces of E 321 (E 321/1-10) are now live on Discovery. To celebrate, here’s a short thread about the remote cataloguing process, and what you can find. #LegalRecords https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C6700
Working with @RobertsMartinO this project uses images of finding aids currently held in the Map Room at Kew to fill E 321 gaps on Discovery. Pictured are the finding aids, spreadsheet data, and final Discovery entries for E 321/9/1-5.
There are lots of items of interest, particularly for local historians. As ever, where possible the subject county has been described on Discovery, so users can now search E 321 for a specific county. Place names have been transcribed as written on the finding aids.
As the Court of Augmentations dealt with lands of dissolved monasteries, E 321 also has its fair share of bishops (and archbishops) as parties. Two successive archbishops of York, Edward Lee and Robert Holgate, appear in E 321/3/30 and E 321/4/95. https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C8098945
Finally, as a Gosling I would be remiss if I didn’t mention E 321/2/66, which lists as the subject fees relating to cranes and geese. https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C8098716
Though we can’t physically access the documents in E 321 right now, hopefully these catalogue descriptions will whet your appetites for when we can. Item descriptions will continue to be added over the coming weeks, so #WatchThisSpace. #LegalRecords https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C6700
