Trans-competent healthcare at @BSUH_maternity has been misrepresented, ridiculed & demonised for the sake of a clickbait headline, fabricating a false conflict between women’s rights & trans rights, & ultimately putting trans & non-binary people at risk. https://cutt.ly/Jk125I1
Other trusts & birth workers - all the info about their care pathway & language changes are open access on their website. I encourage you to read the actual guidelines rather than rely on newspaper headlines. https://bit.ly/2N3auBu
Don’t let media misrepresentation & subsequent backlash dissuade you from providing safe & affirmative care to ALL who use your services - this means not only pregnant women, but also trans men & non-binary people.
If anything, this furore has demonstrated precisely WHY this work is so needed right now. The last week has given a brief glimpse of the challenges that trans men & non-binary people can face when trying access perinatal services.
The response from the community, birth workers & other HCPs has been overwhelmingly positive & celebratory. By sharing publicly I hope it helps pregnant trans men & non-binary people all over the UK to receive the safe & supportive care they deserve.
