(1/7) Never heat the house using a gas stove/oven/makeshift fire inside. A thread dispelling myths from a guy who almost killed his son and himself with carbon monoxide.
(2/7) All fire consumes oxygen. At first, fire eats the oxygen in the room and forms carbon dioxide. If you do not have outside air coming in, the fire will eat the extra oxygen in the room, then make deadly carbon monoxide. Without outside air flowing in, this is unavoidable.
(3/7) Carbon monoxide does not smell like natural gas (it's odorless), it's not trapped behind an oven door, and it is not uncommon to find families in their beds, sitting together on a sofa or around a table, dead. Thinking you can rely on feeling symptoms is a fool's game.
(4/7) Who survives CM poisoning has a 6 week window period in which they can become permanently incontinent, psychotic, mute, have parkinson's-like symptoms, or paralysis. It's called delayed neurologic sequelae (DNS). No one has ever found a cure for it. You are fucked for good.
(5/7) Critical thinkers will say: "but I bake during winter". Normally, outside oxygen enters your home, via open windows, opening a door, or a ventilation system. This isn't the case when you have no electricity during an ice storm.
(6/7) My son collapsed in front of me while having a seizure from carbon monoxide. Worst moment of my life. We were very lucky, for many reasons, and only narrowly escaped legit tragedy.
(7/7) Right now 4.3 million texans are w/out electricity, and I know far too many of them have turned on the stove because like me, they are from a "warm" place and never got taught better. Please spread the word, PLEASE avoid what I went through.
