I think ppl forget that, what with South Park, Family Guy, the rest of it, the 00/10s had this sacred but enormously rickety mantra that as long as you were being horrible to everyone, any kind of abuse, including racism, classism and sexism, were fine.
There’s been a lot of talk about the treatment of female actresses and pop stars at the time lately too (which hasn’t changed as much as people are implying) and I think all that took cover behind the same shield too. It was a very unlovely time, dominated by extroverted bores.
Anyhoo, I refer you to my thesis that social media, in many of its aspects people identify as negative, is bending much of the cultural space towards justice, and that’s why clips like the above, which were acceptable daytime tv fare, feel shocking now. https://twitter.com/petefrasermusic/status/1360651256004546564
NB, I know the South Park/FG defenders are going to log on fairly soon - I’ve enjoyed both those shows too, but they’re towering examples of a broader cultural point about the decade or so just after the turn of the century which, I’m afraid, kind of stands.
Libertarian weirdos and cartoon avatar weirdos telling me off now, so it’s mutin’ time. Enjoy.
