Hey PhD students: it’s okay for your thesis to pass *with* changes. It’s okay for a paper to come back with revisions. It’s OK to be asked to make changes post-confirmation. These are all normal things. The whole “passed without changes!” thing is the exception, not the rule.
I’m going to go ahead and keep talking about all the times I’ve had to make changes to things, because I think it’s a little odd to glorify the “no changes/no revisions” culture. Academia is messed up enough without adding in the pressure of perfectionism on every thing we do.
Good work can be made better by the input of others. Good work is not often perfect on the first or second attempt. So please don’t try and push for everything (particularly a PhD!) to come back perfect. If it does, great. If it doesn’t, great. All can be fixed.
And hey, full disclosure: my PhD passed WITH CHANGES. My confirmation hearing needed me to follow up with more info. And yet, here I stand
still a Dr
This is all totally normal, and yet we often glorify the perfect bits and don’t mention the rest.
