Today is The Weeknd’s 31st birthday!

Here’s a thread of me talking about my favorite album from him:
Abel Makkonen Tesfaye released his first ever project “House of Balloons” on March 21st of 2011. It’s been almost 10 years since he released it for free.
The Weeknd was between the ages of 19 and 21 when he recorded House Of Balloons.
This was the start of one of the most creative, edgy, emo & unique sounds we’ll ever hear on R&B.
1. High For This

This beautiful introduction helps the listeners to start learning about, at the time, one of the darkest artists yet most beautiful voices we’re ever gonna hear.
2. What You Need

A seductive ballad that references the drugs that Abel consumes & the drugs that he provides to the women he falls in love for.

The track is supposed to explain how the women around Abel have a dependency on the drugs he gives them, in a sexual & physical way.
3. House Of Balloons / Glass Table Girls

A song that referenced Abel’s habit of making parties with multiple women & how he always wanted women to feel at home when they’re in his territory.

The second part of the song alludes to all of the drugs they consumed within the party.
4. The Morning

In this song he tries to explain about how Abel’s interest for the woman starts awakening, but the high from the previous night sends Abel’s girl departing.

This makes Abel go into a truthful reality about how the women he associates himself with truly are.
5. Wicked Games

Here, Abel’s really trying to get to know what loving a woman feels like even though she doesn’t feel the same way about him, knowing that it will fail in the end.

Even though he knows this, he dives into her because he needs confidence.
6. The Party & The After Party

Abel provides unconditional love, sex & drugs to a girl who desperately wants all of that at his party.

At the after party, once she’s completely obsessed with him, Abel begins to show his destructive true colors to enjoy his night with her.
7. Coming Down

The Weeknd has never been good with drugs, so in this song, he implies that whenever his high starts diminishing, he’ll start looking to take care of the woman he loves.

Just a simple explanation about how he’s a different person when he’s under the influence...
8. Loft Music

This is an uptempo song where Abel details what a night with him in his loft will feel like.

Straight to the point, and a pretty common topic that The Weeknd sings about in the rest of the Trilogy.
9. The Knowing

This is the song where The Weeknd gets the most intimate about what he’s thinking about & feeling while having a sexual encounter with the woman he loves. The vocals & production throughout the song encapsulate that experience completely.

My favorite song by him.
To see his progression from the state of his life to what he’s like today, is truly inspiring. From being homeless to what he has achieve today with music like this, it’s incredibly inspiring.
If you would’ve told young The Weeknd that he would get the chance to perform one of his first songs ever at the Super Bowl Halftime Show, I don’t think he could ever believe you.
I hope this man has the happiest of birthdays. After everything he’s been through, and everything he’s achieved to this day, he truly deserves it.
Hope you guys enjoyed it ♥️
