CW: vaccine bias story

So, in some parts of the US you can call local pharmacies and ask to be put on a waiting list for the C19 vaccine so all doses of a vial get used up in case of no-shows, etc.

Yesterday I called and put myself and my husband on the waitlist. 1/
Ofc, I told my friends about joining the waitlist & many reported back being added without any hassle.

However, one friend (who has a noticeable foreign accent) was told to check the website for the vaccine distribution rules when asking about the waitlist. 2/
I thought this was weird because no one else had a problem being added to the waitlist.

So, we tried a switcharoo.

I called with my non-accented (dare I say white sounding?) English & asked to be put on the list. 3/
Guess what?

I got permission to add “my” name to the waitlist.

So, using the pre-supplied info, I added their name (& their spouse’s name) to the vaccine waitlist with no problem.

WTF 4/
IDK for a fact what actually happened in this scenario but I cannot help thinking that bias/racism/bigotry played a part.

And that shit sickens me.

I’m glad I could help them get on the waitlist but I’m disgusted that I had to use my relative “whiteness” to intervene. /End.
Last thoughts:
While I wanted to raise hell about this & name names & all that, the truth is, “we” are still at the mercy of that waitlist.

So we must behave (& bite our tongue) & thank them profusely for adding “our” names to the list for a potentially life-saving vaccine. 😔
