I started applying for various data science jobs the last year of my PhD and put out a TON of applications with no replies. First lesson: The goal of resume/cover letters is to get to a phone interview.
Resume screens are often done by the HR department and listing your papers/abstracts will not often help them understand why/how you would fit the role. The first page of your resume should show a non-technical person why you can fill the role to which you are applying.
