Premier Daniel Andrews says returned travellers at the Holiday Inn at Flinders Lane have chosen to wear garbage bags over their heads when being transferred to the Pullman Hotel to protect their privacy. “They’ve made that decision not us. And they're entitled to,” he says.
The head of COVID-19 Quarantine Victoria Emma Cassar also spoke on this: "We have really nervous residents who don't want their privacy displayed on the news. This is why they are taking those steps. Our PPE requirements for guests leaving is a surgical mask and hand sanitiser".
Asked if there was another way to protect resident's privacy, Ms Cassar replied: "We tried other options this morning, including one with a shield and we moved Sky Buses to block media from taking photos of our community members. Please be mindful of this".
The premier also added: "We all have jobs to do. But, please, everyone in the community needs to know that this stuff these people are wearing isn't PPE. They have been given PPE and have it on. What they are doing is not wanting to be identified".
