If you're in a place below freezing, set all your taps to drip, even if you have the heat set high, and especially if the power goes out.
Trust me, the water bill is cheaper than losing a lot of your possessions and a substantial remodel.

Also know where your water shut-off is
and how to operate it in case a pipe bursts. If it requires a tool, have it next to the valve.

Lastly, fill your bath tub. Should you have to shut off water or have a pipe freeze, you can use a bucket or bowl to fill the cistern of a toilet to flush it, among having drinking
and food/hygeine water.
Also should you lose power and resort to alternate heat sources, keep in mind it is easier and more efficient to heat a single room. Move everyone into that room and body heat will help as well. Blankets over windows and doors (depending on whether your a
alternate heat source requires ventilation or not) is a good way to further increase retained heat.

Stay safe, and stay warm everyone.
