games journalism story time
took me four years to go from: 'damn i wanna write about video games' to my current occupation.
That's not a lot of time, but when you're in it, it feels like forever and there were SO SO SOSOSOSO many moments where i felt like 'this will never happen to me'

i couldn't afford to quit my job, freelancing didn't pay enough. i would often end my 9-5 and work the evening writing. it was HARD and EXHAUSTING
i'm here to tell you its okay if you have to have a day job if writing wont pay the bills. a lot of you are probably in the midst of that right now.
and you may look at a job offer like dualshockers with their dubious ass 'renumeration won't be an issue' statement and think 'well if it gets me in the door...'
STOP RIGHT THERE
STOP RIGHT THERE
i'm talking to everyone but especially YOU Black sisters--you can make your own door
before you think about applying for a ppc job or a job that doesn't pay at all think about how you could write your same words on your own blog for far less stress than being beholden to a page's SEO
here's the story part:
I applied for my kotaku job twice, fourish years apart. I was obviously rejected the first time. Cool, stung but whatever, bid my time, kept plugging along, kept pitching.

when i applied my second time, you know what stuck out to me the most: stephen remembered me (or pulled up my old application whatever) not for all my paid work, but what made the biggest impression on him: the stuff i wrote/submitted from my personal blog
i saw all this to say: it will be hard. it will be long. you may think you won't make it. (and maybe you won't) where your bylines come from don't matter (unless its like bo*nding into c*omics) the content matters.
and i (everyone) would rather have you submit a portfolio full of personal work than from a place that exploited your labor. deadass.
