Oh, I see that Gatekeeping is trending. Let me tell you a story, children. Pull up a seat.

Are you sitting comfortably? Then I'll begin.
Once upon a time, there was a hobby. Doesn't matter which one, you pick. It was a small thing that really only seemed to cater to a select
group. Maybe it was popular, maybe it wasn't. The point is, it subsisted on the fans who adored it and eked out an existence that way.
Then others came. People who were new fans, but suggested that things might change. The fans of the hobby were excited! More people to enjoy the
Then others came. People who were new fans, but suggested that things might change. The fans of the hobby were excited! More people to enjoy the
hobby with! Only problem is, these new fans were not like they were. They could not appreciate what existed as it was, they wanted to change it. And they did this slowly, over time. They slid into this hobby at all levels. These new fans became people who were selling or even
making the things that went with this hobby, things that the old fans had eagerly bought and paid for and supported the creators. These new fans, though, they were the ones making things now...and they instituted changes.
Little things at first, but then the big things came. The
Little things at first, but then the big things came. The
old fans felt betrayed, and rightly so. They had devoted so much time and energy to this, while the people who were doing things like this were using that hobby as a stepping stone to other things.
It was clear that THEY didn't care like the old fans did.
But when the old fans
It was clear that THEY didn't care like the old fans did.
But when the old fans
protested against this, they were met with something strange. Five little words.
"It's not for you anymore."
Then those new fans, those people who had slipped into the hobby under the guise of friendship, they got in touch with people in the media. People who could broadcast

Then those new fans, those people who had slipped into the hobby under the guise of friendship, they got in touch with people in the media. People who could broadcast
to the world that the old fans of the hobby were just the worst kind of people. People who should be ridiculed and mocked and even, in some cases, outright attacked.
Whenever they proved themselves to be none of those things, there were still always those five words haunting

And so, the old fans left the hobby. The hobby started to lose all the money being put into it, and it died. Maybe quickly, maybe slowly, but the point is...the new fans coming in saw the hobby as a fad or a trend or a stepping stone to other

Another hobby came along. People were into it. The old fans were involved in this new thing. Perhaps this time it would be different, perhaps...
…and it happened again.
And it WILL happen again. And again. And again.

If you enter a hobby or a fandom or whatever have
you, your foremost thought should be to show respect to those that came before.
If you cannot do that, you have no place there.
Gatekeeping is GOOD, children. It is the only thing that keeps the things we love from having their throats slit and being left to bleed out.

We've seen it with comic books. We've seen it with Star Wars. With Star Trek. And we've seen it elsewhere.
It's time for it to stop. It's time for us to fight back.
It's time to send #EntitledCreators and #FakeFans back where they came from. #KeepTheGate
