It’s cold. You don’t have power. What do you do? My house once lost power in the winter and the thermostat read 39F. Here are 10 tips.
1) Do not play with fire, literally. If you have fireplace, make sure your flue is open and that the chimney damper is working (it could stick)
2) Do not sit in a running car to warm up with the garage door closed. Open the garage door.
3) If you are staying home, think layers - not only clothing but blankets, quilts and fleeces.
4) A hat helps as do light gloves.
5) Find flashlights; put batteries on the counter.
6) Ration your candles. You’ll be surprised how much light you get from one candle.
7) If you have electronics that could fry from a power surge, unplug them.
8) Don’t bring your gas grill in the house. Too much can go wrong. Garage with the open door is fine.
9) Bring in beverages from the garage that could freeze - bottled water, fizzy water, soda. Alcohol should be fine.
10) Your water heater should keep a tank warm a few hours.
