SO!! LET'S TALK ABOUT COLOR.🌈✨
Specifically, my personal technique/preferences for picking color palettes for my own art! This is what works for me, but everyone has their own style... take this with a grain of salt!

LET'S BEGIN. (1/?) https://twitter.com/boxfulthoughts/status/1361453312743251968
A common issue I see with newer artists is that their colors are heavily saturated. I just want to say that there is a way to make saturated colors look appealing, but without a solid understanding of color theory, you might have a hard time balancing your hues. (2/?)
You can clearly see how different the color schemes for this character look (see above). One is “soft,” while the other is heavily saturated. How do you get soft colors? By adjusting the saturation and value of your color palette in order to get softer, harmonious hues. (3/?)
The trick is to pick colors that will visually register as the hues you want, while not necessarily being those colors. Instead of using bright yellow for the character’s body, for example, I adjust my colors slightly to the left on the color wheel to a lighter orange hue. (4/?)
This will still visually register as yellow, only much softer on the eyes. (5/?)
To soften the palette further, I used a reddish gray color for the sneaker soles, as well as an off white (yellow-tinted) color for the sneaker toe caps, and tee-shirt. (6/?)
(My color palettes tend to be analogous or complementary, so they’re often very close in hue with slight adjustments depending on the color’s placement on the wheel.)
Add some color to the lineart (something close to one of your existing hues, like dark purple, for example) and voila! The colors are way softer than what we started with!

BUT WAIT! THERE'S MORE...🌈✨ (8/?)
Let’s quickly go over some techniques for applying shadows to your drawing! Try to avoid using black, as it can dampen your color palette and make your artwork appear flat. Pick a nice, saturated color (i.e. purple) and try playing around with the blending mode and opacity. (9/?)
Different colors and blending modes can create different moods, so be sure to have an idea of how you want your art to make people feel (in my case, bright, friendlier colors will make people feel happy or safe). (10/?)
