TEN ALBUMS, TEN ARTISTS, ONE DECADE: THE 2000s

I’ve come up with a challenge to pick the best hip hop album from every year in the 2000s, but the catch is, no artist can feature more than once!

I’ll be tagging 4 others to try this but would love to see yours too
2000: Stankonia - Outkast

Starting off with a bang, this funky, energetic album is jam packed with jaw-dropping flows, catchy hooks and gorgeous beats. It’s so fun hearing the duo twist their tongues around their lyrics with real enthusiasm.

Favourite Song: Gasoline Dreams
2001: Stillmatic - Nas

After talk of him falling off, Nas set out to prove that he was indeed, Stillmatic. Nas channels real passion into the watertight tracklist, with his remarkable storytelling elevating the album to a certified classic.

Favourite Song: What Goes Around
2002: The Eminem Show - Eminem

Exuberance personified. The crazed rapper flaunts his impressive array of witty punchlines and lyrical gymnastics over layered and interesting production which varies from climactic and bold to devious and eerie.

Favourite Song: Business
2003: Get Rich Or Die Trying - 50 Cent

This album boasts some of hip hop’s best ever hooks over truly dynamic production. 50 raps with the determination and grit of a man who was shot 9 times, lived to tell the tale, and certainly won’t be stopped now.

Favourite Song: Many Men
2004: Madvillainy - MF DOOM & Madlib

The ultimate supervillain’s soundtrack. MF DOOM’s staggering flow and Madlib’s riveting production marry up perfectly in this menacing masterpiece of an album. May he rest in peace 🖤

Favourite Song: Fancy Clown
2005: Be - Common

The pinacle of soulful hip hop. Kanye’s production is simply masterful as he infuses heartwarming samples with Common’s impassioned delivery. This album is a warm, profound sensation that I never tire of.

Favourite Song: The Food
2006: Lupe Fiasco’s Food and Liquor - Lupe Fiasco

Lupe’s lyrical creativity never fails to astound me. The grand, orchestral instrumentals provide a lavish backdrop for Lupe to perfectly spit his intelligent rhymes and infectious hooks over.

Favourite Song: Kick, Push
2007: American Gangster - Jay-Z

Hov provides a more triumphant take on the gangster lifestyle than the bulk of his grittier early work. On this more brightly produced record, Hov offers an exquisite, upbeat celebration of his hustling success.

Favourite Song: American Gangster
2008: 808s and Heartbreak - Kanye West

Maybe the most influential hip hop album of all time. Kanye pours his broken heart out through autotuned vocals over minimalist 808 drum beats. A sorrowful emotional journey that leaves me wistful every time.

Favourite Song: Coldest Winter
2009: Man on the Moon: The End of Day - Kid Cudi

Cudi’s soothing vocals and addictive hooks make for a thoroughly enjoyable listen. The eerie yet melancholy production create a bittersweet ambience that is well matched by Cudi’s singing.

Favourite Song: Pursuit of Happiness
