When I was 20 years old (and pregnant with my first child) I moved into my grandfather’s home to care for him in exchange for cheap rent. The agreement was I would pay all the bills for the house, but pay no actual rent. My grandmother had passed only a few months before, and 1/x
He was alone and needed some help.
It was then that I discovered how cruel property taxes were. My grandfather’s house was paid off in full, but he owed $2k in annual property taxes. (This was in 2000). My grandfather’s SS check was under $900/month. How could he survive on 2/x
