How many advancements in the sciences and arts have we lost due to sexism, racism, and the unsustainable nature of academic research as it currently exists? https://www.cnn.com/2020/12/16/us/katalin-kariko-covid-19-vaccine-scientist-trnd/index.html
I'm not saying Katalin Karikó, the mother of mRNA vaccines, was demoted and devalued at UPenn due to her gender. If she was, that story hasn't been told yet. But we know these pressures exist, especially in less diverse disciplines, including many STEM fields.
While I agree diversity and equity are intrinsically valuable, ethically and morally, I also think it's important and useful to talk about what we lose, as a society, when we let structural inequalities deprive us of the voices and contributions of so many.
