The Polar Jet Stream over Texas today:
Context: the jet stream is powered by the temperature difference between the tropics and the poles. But since the Arctic is warming several times faster than the tropics are, this difference is decreasing, along with the polar jet stream speed.
Today the jet stream is over Texas, bringing with it record low temperatures and snow. For a region not used to this, it can have huge problems for infrastructure. Many homes are without power because the natural gas for electricity is being diverted to keep their furnaces going.
Another aspect is that these slow jet stream troughs are getting locked into place for far longer than normal. What used to pass after a few days is now sticking around for a week or more. In the spring the rains delay planting, and in the summer the heat drops yields.
