I dont think I've ever told many people this (and I've never actually reminded him) When I was 11 I was beaten up on the way home from my local non-Jewish comprehensive. It was an antisemitic assult. The first time I had ever encountered antisemitism.
The following day after my parents had made a report, a much much younger @MarkGardnerCST visited my house to take my statement and to comfort me. I dont think he would remember this.
He was the guy who had to explain to me why people would do this to me.
The man has been fighting fascists since long before I was born. I'm incredibly privileged that in my day job I often get to speak to him and learn from him.
The following year my parents enrolled me at a Jewish comprehensive in East London. It would never have been their first choice and to this day I have many complaints about what was taught, and how it was taught. But it provided sanctuary and safety at the time.
CST, now led by Mark, help secure that school that provided me with that sanctuary. They are all anti-racists to their core and any attempt to suggest otherwise is beyond cheap.
That was 23 years ago.
