We’re only 1 week into the Spring semester here @Cornell.

This weekend I spoke with many undergrads, and frankly I am SUPER ALARMED by the stress levels and workload every single one of them complained of. #mentalhealth @AcademicChatter

What’s going on? A few observations 🧵
(1) I’m worried that this is more common than we know, and only going to continue impacting our students: https://twitter.com/jeffpeapod/status/1361138665045561344
I can only hope undergraduates get a bit more bereavement support than graduate student instructors (and faculty) do for learning to support their bereaved students.

This is something we have been asking for since Spring 2020. @CornellGSU
(2) Access to essential, general medical care has dramatically reduced because staff and resources have been moved to caring for isolated COVID-positive students.

The only notification students have received about this was IN A @cornellsun OP-ED by @CornellHealth leadership. https://twitter.com/jeffpeapod/status/1359272676683100163
We need to honestly consider what it means that @Cornell is asking students to seek care — during a pandemic — from already thinly stretched #Twithaca community care resources.

If this was always the plan if COVID increased, how is inviting students back even remotely ethical? https://twitter.com/momoadeg/status/1360767697701789698
Another huge issue across #HigherEd right now, which we are not discussing enough??

“Due to licensure restrictions, Cornell Health is unable to provide clinical mental health services to students outside of NY State.”

THIS NEEDS A SOLUTION !!!!!!!!!!
I’m curious how long it will be before students start requesting a reimbursement for the mandatory health fee because @Cornell @CornellHealth can’t meet our basic needs.

[A gentle reminder that the health fee is a relatively new, yet wildly unpopular, concept.]
(3) Given the enrollment complexities with remote and hybrid learning, it is much harder for students to “shop” for classes. As a result, it seems many courses are jumping right into material faster than usual, with little transition from an extraordinarily long winter break.
✨ We cannot underestimate the impact of the academic calendar on workload and wellbeing. ✨
I did some quick research and discovered that this is the first semester since 2016 where we’ve had a @Cornell semester begin on a Monday of a 5-day week.

THIS IS IMPORTANT!!
(At that time MLK Day became a university holiday. And in 2014, after lots of drama, Presidents’ Day weekend also became a 4-day weekend.)
Not only has the calendar (and global dumpster fire) set us up for a difficult start, but it offers no promise of relief.

Spring break has been canceled and aside from miscellaneous “wellness days” we are straight through for 3 months.
I don’t have a glamorous way to end this thread. I am worried about the toll on everyone. I want to make a plea to @Cornell @CornellHealth @CornellGrad & all university leadership to actually *listen to* students.

We actually have a lot of ideas, but this isn’t one of them:
