Seeing the Senators move players now after a disappointing start just kind of underlines how incongruent their offseason was. It was billed as something to make the team harder to play against and more competitive.
Judging by a lot of the moves, the Senators emphasized bringing in vets on really short-term deals to be character guys and leaders who by every measure, weren't particularly good. Which is fine if the ultimate goal was to bottom out and afford the prospects time to develop.
The incongruency came from turning around and moving valuable picks for Stepan and Murray in what was essentially a tank season judging by their other moves. Looked like they were already punting, but bought high on players deemed expendable by their former teams for cap purposes
Within 10 games, vets were waived. 15 games in, vets are dealt. Adding vets means nothing if they're not talented. Acquiring rentals and going all-in on a G when the market is about to be saturated this summer -- all while faced with an abbreviated season -- was suspect.
Maybe it's just me, but any moves made now just kind of underscore how underwhelming the offseason was. The org spent $20M+ and used a bunch of assets and have very little to show for it.
The kids are great, but they need a bunch of help. It's going to take more time to draft and develop prospects to properly insulate the current group. Where this organization struggles is identifying and acquiring talent outside the organization that has unfulfilled upside.
Roll the dice on Zub-like signings. Seek out more Turris-like trades. Stop trading assets for predictable diminishing returns because a player knows the key to a good mixtape in the dressing room.
