How come the #MortalKombat tournament is still entirely a fighting contest in modernity?

Like if this has been going on since "the dawn of time" I get why it was fighting at first; but shouldn't they have moved up to other sports and games over centuries?
I mean has anyone even tried ASKING? Can Raiden just go up to Shang Tsung in the off-season like "So hey... our civilization evolved to measure skill and status by other things by now. We do The World Cup. British Bake-Off. NASCAR. Do you guys even have cars?"
Then just give Outworld like an off year to git gud at some agreed-upon Earth Stuff to just keep things fair and even.
