why i believe harry might be trans (an umbrella term), a thread:

*disclaimer: i am not claiming this is a fact. i am simply saying that i believe harry MIGHT be attempting to trans code, or signal to the public that he is trans, before he is able to come out.

first, what do i mean when i say harry might be trans? i mean harry might not be cisgender. at this point i do not think harry is a trans woman. he likely falls on the nonbinary spectrum, but i do not speculate on his specific identity because there are so many possibilities.

some people think it is offensive to speculate that harry is trans. to this i say: if you would be offended if someone thought you weren’t cis, you’re transphobic. harry isn’t transphobic.

as long as trans voices are centered in the conversation and speculation isn’t because of stereotypes, there isn’t a problem with bringing it up. just like people can queer code to indicate that they aren’t straight, they can trans code.

with all of this being said, not every trans person in the fandom is comfortable discussing this matter. that’s okay. if you aren’t comfortable discussing it, don’t feel pressured to do so. but please don’t try to silence those of us who would like to talk about it.

alright, let’s get into it. first of all, i will not be discussing any specific fashion choices that harry has made whatsoever. fashion is not inherently gendered, though there are stereotypes of “feminine” and “masculine” clothes, etc. this isn’t proof though.

the only thing i will say about harry’s fashion is that he does seem to include small “femme” aspects to his appearance nearly all the time. whether that’s pearls, nail polish, a handbag, lingerie, etc. this might be a subtle way for him to experience gender euphoria.

next, let’s talk about the fine line album cover. it uses all of the trans flag colors, in a similar pattern. in the photoshoot, we have yellow, purple, and black, which are on the nonbinary flag (last photo is the enby flag for reference)

a couple other examples of harry wearing the trans and enby flag colors! while some/all of these could just be coincidences, even some cishets outside his fandom have noticed the fine line cover and asked questions about if he is trans.

now, things harry has said about gender: “i don’t think people are still looking for this gender differentiation”, “i think there’s so much masculinity in being vulnerable and allowing yourself to be feminine” and more https://www.teenvogue.com/story/harry-styles-gender-norms-fading

harry also has a mermaid tattoo. there’s a trans rights org called Mermaids in the uk (mermaidsgender on insta). mermaids are considered a trans symbol bc of the disconnect between the top and bottom of the mermaid - similar to a trans person experiencing dysphoria.

harrys mermaid tattoo is interesting because it specifically has a vagina, when generally the tail would cover any genitalia. when asked about why he got the tattoo, harry said “its cause i am a mermaid” which could be a metaphor for being trans

additionally, there are themes of struggling with ones identity, gender exploration, and finally, acceptance of oneself, on HS2 (and HS1). songs relating to this include Only Angel, Lights Up, Falling, She, and Fine Line. i will do further analyses of these songs in the future.

what has harry said about songs? lights up: “it’s about self reflection, self discovery, and just freedom” falling: “is about getting right before a place that you recognise as a low for you” fl album: “a very fond period of my life just because ... I learnt so much about myself”

there has also been an interesting progression of his fl era music videos. lights up the song is about shame, but in the mv he is embraced by people. adore you mv shows him relying entirely on one person to be happy, and therefore not being able to make himself happy.

falling mv hes in the water in a frilly outfit like a mermaid, singing about self hatred/dysphoria. ws he’s in feminine clothing and with women but not in an oversexualized way. golden mv shows him running, driving, and again in the water. he has pieces of femininity throughout.

the loudest mv is TPWK. h starts wearing a bow tie (traditionally masculine symbol), then takes it off to mirror phoebe more effectively. they match and dance together. she dips him while dancing (ie, she leads). h and phoebe look almost identical, on purpose. the line is blurred

another thing i’ve noticed is that harry’s friends and family are using very specific language to refer to him. harry lambert calls his look “granny chic” (when the gp was calling him a grandpa) and said Princess Diana was inspo for one of his looks https://www.thestar.com/life/fashion_style/2020/03/03/harry-styles-is-taking-gender-fluid-fashion-mainstream.html

harris reed almost never uses pronouns for harry. harris has referred to harry as “this incredible being” “the fluidly handsome harry styles” “this kind soul” “this supportive and kind being” and other primarily gender neutral terms. important to note harris is nonbinary as well.

king princess once referred to h as a “sexy man”, got flustered and corrected herself to “sexy boy girl man”. shes tweeted “i’m so excited to be supporting my sis @/harry_styles. i’m fully hard and excited to destroy the stadiums of europe with my bro.

there are a lot of other things i could talk about and i could go more in depth on most of this, but i think this is a decent starting point! if you have any questions or want sources for quotes that i haven’t linked, let me know. i have them, i just didn’t have space.

one thing bc i’ve gotten a few dms about it: we should continue to use he/him pronouns for h unless he tells us otherwise. not every trans person changes pronouns when they come out (pronouns =/= gender), and changing someone’s pronouns before they come out can be very offensive.
