why the sickle and hammer symbol (☭) is offensive and harmful : a thread
1) The sickle and hammer symbol was created by Yevgeny Ivanovich Kamzolkin for and popularized by the soviet union. The soviet union was a fascist regime that committed mass terror, starved millions, killed many individuals for speaking up against the government, and deported ->
minorities.

2) USSR’s actions still affect many countries, but right now I'm gonna talk about my country’s history, Azerbaijan's, as an example. Russian (starting from 19th century till now) politics regarding caucasus have led to many clashes of armenian and azerbaijani people.
The war only ended in 2020. USSR’s actions greatly contributed to the 30 year old war that estimatedly killed 38 - 48 thousand people. After the collapse of USSR Russia used their position as the mediator to sell military aid to both sides.
3) USSR symbols are banned in post soviet countries such as estonia, georgia, latvia, lithuania and ukraine.
The initial intention behind the creation was to symbolize the struggle of the working class, however the creators and the most popular users of the symbol were behind a fascist regime that terrorized (1) many people. ->
Ignoring and disregarding the history behind the symbol is harmful to minorities who are still (2) affected.
