Photojournalists are a community’s eyes and ears. We’re often the closest to the story, and take on a lot of emotional labour (and sometimes trauma) to do that work. Imagine doing all that for a newsroom that treats your work as little more than window dressing.
To be clear, this is not all newsrooms. I’ve worked with many teams and many editors who were incredible, and we did our best work together. But it is a widespread and growing problem in Canada, especially as outlets rely on freelance photogs more and more
