As a campaign operative who has led two state parties, and run and consulted to dozens of successful GOP campaigns, I’m going to offer an unpopular opinion among GOP activists: It is not the job of county or state committees to impose purity tests on their elected officials. 1/4
Political parties exist to help candidates win campaigns, period. They have no worth as enforcers of loyalty to any individual such as we see playing out around the country. These elected officials have a duty to uphold their oaths AS THEY INTERPRET THEM. 2/4
If members of a constituency want to hold their elected representatives to account, do it at the ballot box. In the meantime, knock off the performative bullshit. January 6th can be interpreted differently by different people. These are votes of conscience, not tribal purity. 3/4
The only result of these censures will be to provide fodder for the mainstream media to highlight the differences between some elected officials and the base of the party. At best, it’s a stupid distraction. At worst, it will result in the loss of seats and political power. 4/4
