i really wish more ppl would analyze fandom as identity and the capitalistic implications of that.... like. i know we all meme about marvel movies but i rlly think fandom as identity in a world where we're increasingly disenfranchised with reality is a real concept
corporations prey on...hm
i think like, theres definitely a degree of self criticism that doesnt go up on social media, we can never know anyones intentions really, but at the same time..i also think a lot of us just. accept too much
theres this pervasive idea that like, people who run social media are interns, or media conglomerates have our best interests in mind...now dont get me wrong. indie art isnt always better. and just bc art wasnt made out of love doesnt mean it cant be good. but.
its more like. art is a central part of our lives...as humans? we use it to relate back to our feelings, to reality...but increasingly, people in the first world (for lack of a better term) want to get lost in it. escapism is fine but...
i think when fandom/media so increasingly becomes the central tenant of your identity that it consumes you...it's dangerous. it's really dangerous and we need to be more self critical
like sure its funny to say "i can read a 50k word fanfic but not a page of a book" like i agree haha meme...but like...do jokes not...often highlight serious problems? idk. consume media responsibly. like.
i think a lot of people don't realize just how much the "cooling salve of fiction, especially as disconnected from reality as possible" narrative can be...dangerous. escapism in excess...so much to the point that you don't consider reality...
it doesn't sit right with me...
