Small observation: yesterday I 'attended' Boskone, an SFF convention I would normally not be able to attend without spending exorbitant fees flying out to the US, spending 30+ hours in airports and flights, finding hotels etc.
COVID has shown us that many of the interactions we take for granted in SFF can be conducted digitally. Doing so unlocks a wealth of knowledge to people from across the world, as well as marginalized groups who would not be able to travel for various reasons.
Is it perfect? No, of course not. But as we look to moving on from these situations, we should retain what we've learned. It's possible to transmit and engage in many of these conversations across the globe. It's possible to include more people. Meatspace is not the end-all.
What I sincerely hope is that this leads to spaces where conversations and awards ceremonies - especially held with some assumption of the 'world' being included - ACTUALLY include the world, and not just the token few that happen to be in the right space at the right time.
