My agent is @JimMcCarthy528. He is quick to respond, thoughtful when he does, has learned new markets when I wanted to diversify, includes me on submission plans, etc.. He advocates for my first book, which was (unintentionally!) orphaned by its first agent, even though he https://twitter.com/SierraWritesYA/status/1361176305128062977
doesn't get paid for it. Once, when I was in another state to do book events, I was sexually harassed by the driver who picked me up at the airport. The publisher was paying for it. I was so upset, and so afraid-- I didn't want to "be difficult" about it, but I was afraid this
guy would pick me up again (and do this to other authors! The publisher uses this service a lot!) Not only did he call me on a Saturday to help calm me down, HE contacted the publisher for me (and they instantly leapt into action.) Then he checked in with me for the rest of the
trip. Another trip, the hotel the house booked for me wouldn't check me in because I don't have a credit card. I was alone, in NYC, with no money, all my luggage, with an event in 6 hours. The publicist told me it was fine to put down my credit card; it wouldn't be charged. Jim
stepped in to speak to the publicist and explain MY situation. Pretty sure this was a weekend day again, but in any case, none of that is really in his job description, but he instantly stepped up to help me. Finally, when I got some pretty dire health news, he didn't write me
off, or start to slip away from me. He kept up with the calendar I gave him to expect certain news from certain specialists, and he followed up with me. And when I finally got the diagnosis, he wasn't like, well, your career's over! He said, everything can be accommodated. We'll
do whatever you need to do, to keep making this work. And he has. Every single day. I truly feel like we are partners, and I really really hope he never fucks off to Michigan to grow cherries or something, because I have no idea how I would replace him.
