Listened to @JackAChew and @AdamMeakins discussing all thing manual therapy on the Chew this morning. We need more open discussions like this. It sparked a thread, so if you are not a fan of my thread, read no more. https://twitter.com/jackachew/status/1361291830285934598
Here is @AdamMeakins recent podcast feeding an old blog post. https://twitter.com/ptpodcast/status/1357564878752342023
As an advocate of “ first seek to understand, then to be understood “ it appears some of the nuance lost in manual therapy debates is due to not defining “ manual therapy”
Another issue that arises is that clinicians who identify as manual therapist often feel that an attack on manual therapy is an attack on them and their practice style.
I am pro manual therapy and don’t “hate it” l yet I am an ardent critic of manual therapy and the myths, lies and rhubarb surrounding it. See here 👇 https://twitter.com/retlouping/status/1283425924235571206
I propose that manual therapy is part of a good clinical reasoning process, once again I ask “ how do you correct a lumbar shift without manual therapy?” ( it is possible and I do have a method, but manual therapy helps some) https://twitter.com/retlouping/status/1259844881071120384
Manual therapy can be part of a patient (focused) centered approach, without all the mysterious BS surrounds it effect.
As the example below demonstrates, 👇
I have no idea what you define as manual therapy, unless I ask and listen. Clinicians often debate without seeking to see the other persons point of view. I commented on this last week. Even the greats did it. https://twitter.com/retlouping/status/1358763274251165698
Manual therapy has a place in my reasoning, I use it sparingly as an adjunct, to assist self treatment. https://twitter.com/retlouping/status/1260992527861252096
If we as educators and clinicians are to “influence the minds of the youth” then maybe we need to define , understand, review the history, highlight the issues and allow the youth to decide.
After all belief if the biggest non specific effect. https://twitter.com/retlouping/status/1291410300042915841
There continues to be nothing new under the sun except the angle of approach. https://twitter.com/retlouping/status/1315202481807335426
I understand both sides of the manual therapy debates, I am aware of the evidence. I still find it useful in my patient centered paradigm. I also understand you may not agree, and that is alright too.
Thanks for reading my ramble.
