ISLAMIC FUNERAL PROCESS

Muslims are not the majority in Kenya therefore much of their rituals are unknown to the majority of Kenyans. This includes the funeral process. This thread is to provide basic chronology of event of Muslims funeral process...
HURRY TO BURRY

Muslims believe that the grave is part of the hereafter life known as BARZAKH. The grave can be a garden from the heavens or an extension of HELL, depending on the deeds of the deceased.

So in the spirit of HOPEFULNESS Muslims are encouraged to hurry the burial
so that the deceased goes to enjoy his abode in grave as a garden from heavens. So Muslims wouldn’t want to deny the deceased his privileges that Allah has prepared for him.

The deceased has 4 rights
1 to be washed
2 to be shrouded
3 to be prayed upon
4 to be buried
WASHING
When a Muslim dies the body is washed by close relatives. Male by males female by female relatives. This is to avoid exposing the body to strangers who may broadcast weaknesses of the deceased. The body is washed while covered by a cloth. Warm water and soap are used.
SHROUDING
Muslims are not allowed to be buried with any valuables like suits or jewelry. The body after washing is wrapped in preferably 3 pieces of white cloth and tied at head end, feet end and in the middle. The shrouds are usually perfumed. #langatamuslimcemetry
PRAYERS
having been washed and shrouded the body is prayed upon, known as janaza prayer. Women pray at the home and then the body’s taken to mosque to be prayed for by men. The prayer seeks forgiveness for the dead, asks Allah to admit them in heaven and patience for the family
BURIAL
Before the body is taken to the grave, it’s declared that if the deceased owed or was owed by any one a relative has taken up that responsibility so that they aren’t buried with any liability. The body is usually carried in a bier carried by men.
In all these processes people are discouraged from talking unimportant things and instead pray for forgiveness for the dead, and that they be admitted to heavens and contemplate on death.
BURIAL
In the grave, relatives descend to receive the body and lay it in a small trench in the grave facing Mecca 🕋. Then the small trench is covered by wood or wood planks. Then grave is filled up by the soil by the people who’d attended the burial. Then final prayer is read.
Before people depart they say their final condolences to the family and relatives.
Muslims are not allowed:
To delay the burial unnecessarily
Talk bad about the dead
To Wail n beating themselves up and tearing up clothes when mourning
To abandon a dead body unattended.

End.
