I suspect a lot of American leftists hate mutual aid because it feels like something a church would do. The poison of Christopher Hitchens still lingers.
In the last week I've heard seen a half dozen prominent leftists come out hard against anarchists, accusing them of being unrealistic. Yet it seems like anarchists do good work in communities, helping take care of people the system does not.
Those prominent leftists carried on and on about how the anarchist ideas are utopian because "we don't live in that world yet." (Funny how I heard that exact phrase from all of them. Must have a group chat.)

Anarchists practice their beliefs right now, though.
During the Spanish civil war anarchists had autonomous zones that flourished despite the conditions. They were destroyed by both the communists and fascists teaming up against them.

A similar fate for Makhno. And Afrin.
Over and over we see anarchist autonomous zones appearing in history in conditions of war, famine, and misery.

Over and over we see the people flourish for a time before being destroyed by both the right and left.

It does not have to be this way.
