On this #PresidentsDay I wanted to share a quick story about @JoeBiden. In the later years of the Obama administration, I got to know Vice President Biden as I traveled with him occasionally, as a senior Pentagon official in his delegation.
One time, I traveled with him to Iraq, to hear from our diplomats and Generals on the state of the fight. When Air Force Two arrives in a country, there’s always a ton of pomp and circumstance waiting for the VP to climb onto the tarmac.
But what I remember clearly is that the first thing he did when he landed was have his son Beau come onto the plane before he descended so he could embrace him the way he wanted to. Beau was serving in the Army National Guard and had been deployed to Iraq.
In that moment he wasn’t only the VP, he was also a father seeing his son after months in a war zone. It was just a moment, but I remember it. I want my president to be warm & full of empathy, and @JoeBiden, like so many parents who would do anything for their kids, certainly is.
