#COVID #Vaccines in #Zimbabwe

This weekend, I arrived from the US at the airport in Harare as the *first* Zimbabwean in the country to be vaccinated.

The health officer had never seen a vaccine card before.

In the US, the government has purchased enough vaccine to cover the entire population many times over.

Every healthcare worker who wants to be vaccinated has received Pfizer or Moderna.
3/
In America, I know many young healthy people who work from home who have been vaccinated.

There are doses going to waste every day because of poor planning.
4/
To be home in Zimbabwe, next to my friends, family, and colleagues — fellow healthcare workers — who are attending to patients with COVID-19 and dying in the process, brings my privilege into stark reality.

COVID-19 is a *global* battle where every continent, state, and individual has a stake. Yet, via vaccine nationalism, rich countries have prioritized themselves. They have taken more than their fair share. This is going to go down in history as a form of medical apartheid.
