daily reminder that joker is not deep. he’s not some tortured artist caricature that we can find some kind of meaning in. he’s a sociopathic homicidal maniac what is the physical embodiment of chaos who’s purpose is to show that batman is sympathetic towards everyone.
if you want the analytical psyche evaluation of man’s inner turmoil pay I suggest um.... LITERALLY EVERY OTHER MEMBER OF THE ROGUE GALLERY? literally all of those presented below have intricate backstories and explanations behind their motives and eventual villain origins
the best presentations of joker being a chaotic literal demon spawn that we’re never supposed to feel sympathy towards or relate to in media (in my humble opinion) are as follows. None of these iterations should trigger any emotion in you towards this man other than hate
joker’s only purpose is to show how demonic Gotham is and how he is the WORST CASE SCENARIO. even Batman struggles with this. Joker’s role is to show how hard it is for Batman to protect everyone EVEN JOKER bc Batman will not kill him as it’s against his morals.
Joker is not the “other half” of Batman: he’s the embodiment of Batman’s inner struggle of morals to protect everyone in Gotham no matter who or what they may be
of course, you may feel differently or find some stance to argue otherwise but for the most part joker’s lack of humanity and vague origins only further the narrative that he’s not supposed to be empathized and instead feared as a chaotic force in Gotham’s seedy underbelly.
sorry for popping off so early on a monday lol. I guess my reasoning behind this is bc the sn*dercut trailer seems to give joker more screen time for monologuing which we really shouldn’t do unless it’s to further unhinge the character
again, this was done best (IMO) by Heath and Cameron as their monologues only furthered the revelations of Joker’s inner chaos and inducing fear in the audience, not generate sympathy or some sort of understanding behind the character’s motives (if any it was to be more chaotic)
I watched Joaquin’s Joker and (AGAIN: my opinion) was uninterested in the development as it made mental illness an excuse for his chaos and LITERAL MURDER. Joker’s motives are best when unknown as it makes it the biggest mystery besides who’s the man behind the bat-mask
And because of the mystery of Joker’s motives it makes the character even more fearsome and dangerous. In that sense he’s an interesting study of human psyche but that should be it. Humanizing the joker takes away the power from the character and makes him lackluster and boring
Giving the joker backstory (in any way) is again, in my opinion, presented best by @cameronmonaghan in Gotham. His motives are still just being unhinged and chaotic and his origin story becomes further and further muddled as the character progresses
And before I get “oh what about”: of course there are exceptions, as there is for any character in this show, such as when the content is made for literal children
