Aberdeen- The Banter Years (2000-)

We’ll start at the end of the 1999/00 season. After finishing rock bottom and avoiding a relegation playoff Aberdeen meet Rangers in the Scottish Cup Final. Rod Wallace fractures Jim Leighton’s jaw after 2 minutes and striker Robbie Winters ends up in goals. Rangers win 4-0.
Over the course of the next 2 years Ebbe Skovdahl precedes to sign duds such as Leon Mike, Rachid Belabed and Laurent D’Jaffo.
Ebbe is given the boot and Steve Paterson is appointed as his successor. Within 3 months of him being in the job this happens.
After a shambles of a tenure Pele was sacked and left Pittodrie in the boot of a car (no seriously, he did actually leave in the boot of a car).
Jimmy Calderwood arrived from Dunfermline in the summer of 04 and over the next few years brought half of Dunfermline’s first team squad with him (some of whom were actually quite decent)
Fast forward to 2006 now where part time duds Queen’s Park knock Aberdeen out of the league cup on penalties
April 2007- Lee Miller who was signed from Dundee United in the previous summer is the subject of a police report after flashing his arse at his former club’s travelling support at Pittodrie
Also that month, banter years legend Darren Mackie scored the most Darren Mackie goal ever
Whilst out on his stag doo the summer, a pissed Jamie Langfield gets in a fight with Jimmy Calderwood resulting in Calderwood transfer listing him. Sadly he is not sold
In December of that year, Chris Maguire got himself into a bit of bother for a Bebo post threatening to take out Alan Hutton and Barry Ferguson. Nowadays our players wish Rangers players well over Instagram.
February 2008-After having a pie chucked at him prior to kick-off, Jamie Langfield does this in a League Cup semi against Dundee United. We lose 4-1.
March 2008-6 days before a Scottish Cup Quarter-Final replay away to Celtic, Zander Diamond celebrates his birthday in style!
April 2008-Aberdeen lose 4-3 to Queen of the South at Hampden in a Scottish Cup Semi after an abomination of a performance.
March 2009 now and Aberdeen are knocked out of the Scottish Cup by a First Division side for the second season running after losing on penalties in a Quarter-Final replay against Dunfermline at Pittodrie.
After parting with Jimmy Calderwood at the end of the 08/09 season Aberdeen appoint Mark McGhee as his replacement. His first competitive game is a 1-5 home defeat against Czech duds Sigma Olomouc. Start as you mean to go on Mark son.
Aberdeen were on the Soccer AM crossbar challenge in 2009. Davide Grassi failed to introduce himself to the camera before sending the ball into a pile of grass and Derek Young who introduced himself as a sub was the only man to hit the bar in what was his only career achievement.
September 2009-Aberdeen lose yet another Cup game to a First Division side crashing out of the League Cup after being beaten 3-2 after extra time at Dens Park.
In February 2010 they went one further and lost 0-1 to Raith Rovers of the Second Division in a 5th round Scottish Cup replay.
In the summer of 2010, Ricky Foster was loaned out to Rangers after an alleged falling out with Mark McGhee. We got Velicka in return. Grim
By the start of November Aberdeen had only managed 10 points from 10 games but in the words of D-Ream, things can only get better, right? WRONG, Aberdeen fall to a record breaking 9-0 defeat at Celtic Park. McGhee somehow manages to last nearly a month after this.
Craig Brown took over from McGhee after initially rejecting the job offer. Archie Knox returned to the club as Assistant Manager
Not only does Craig Brown welcome Ricky Foster back into the team after his time at Rangers but also made him club captain. Foster is met with a tirade of abuse upon his return prompting Brown to compare him to Sir Alex Ferguson. Foster left for Bristol City that January.
