🚨 The Govt has set up a Review of the Human Rights Act

✅ The @HumanRightsCtte Inquiry is gathering evidence too

📢 It’s important our voices are heard in the Review & Inquiry to share experiences of the HRA in everyday life

This thread explains how we suggest you respond⬇️
🚨 The Review is looking at 20 years of the HRA, but asks narrow Qs which miss the importance of the HRA in everyday life

🤝 We're supporting people & orgs to address this by writing responses explaining what human rights mean to them - submit to BOTH the Review & the Inquiry ⬇️
📢 The Review's Qs are important but don't reflect 20 years of our HRA

🤝 The HRA matters in all the small places close to home where we interact with public bodies – health & care, education, housing

✊ It provides a vital safety net for us all & we must act now to protect it
📢 Our key message: write a response about the value of the Human Rights Act in your life & work ⬇️

✅ Tell the Review who you are & why you’re sharing your experiences - be clear whether you want your personal info published

✅ Explain the impact of the HRA in everyday life ⬇️
✅ If calling for additional rights protections be clear that building on our protections means protecting what we have first

✅ If part of a group/org/network consider using a survey to gather views & stories of your members

🙌 Here is some inspiration: real stories of people, groups & frontline workers stories about using the HRA ⬇️

📽️ Sarah talks about the positive use of the HRA as a powerful tool for decision-making in health services:
📽️ Joe talks about using the HRA to challenge forced and unnecessary isolation of a person with learning disabilities during the pandemic:
📢 Ian explains the difference human rights mean to him - they are "so important in holding commissioners & services to account"

📽️ Hear how Ian uses the HRA as a carer for his son and wife, and to support other carers:
📢 We're clear that you do NOT have to respond to the Review's legal Qs if you do not want to

✅ Simply add a note explaining why you are not & that you are sharing your important experience of the HRA

🙌 Sharing our stories ensures they inform the evidence-base of the Review
➡️ The Review’s 8 legal questions are important too, but they are narrow & focus on how the law works in the court room

✅ If you do decide to answer some or all of them, we’ve written a guide to help you

📢 The HRA Review's questions are important but don’t provide much space to share experiences of our HRA in everyday life & work

🙌 Let's share these stories with both the Review & the Inquiry - use our support to produce one evidence submission for both: https://www.bihr.org.uk/ihrar-bihr
