With news the Amsterdam is emerging as a serious challenger to London, for center of European financial services industry, here is a list of why the Netherlands is one of the world’s most interesting and paradoxical countries:
1. It has the world's highest wealth inequality, but a stable and high quality of life (primogeniture inheritance from Dutch East India Company (VoC) and very high LTV mortgages)
2. It’s renowned for being liberal and progressive, but had the highest number of foreign national SS officers and the Dutch killed and ate their Prime Minister in the 17th C.
3. It has a shortage of land but is the world's second biggest agricultural exporter.
4. Its landscape is flat and boring but it’s famous for landscape painting.
5. It’s home to Europe's most important and valuable tech company ASML (worth quarter of a trillion $).
6. It’s the world leader in ‘Agtech’ and has decent startup ecosystem.
7. It has lots of cyclists, but is one of the world’s biggest importers of coal.
8. It was home to the world's biggest ever company (VoC) with a market cap much larger than today's technology platforms and its own army and license to wage war.
9. The dutch invented capital markets.
10. most of the country is under sea level - but unthreatened by rising sea levels due to global warming.
11. It has the highest population density in Europe
12. The Dutch have the healthiest diet in the world.
13. The 6th happiest nation on earth.
14. The most physically active nation in Europe.
15. The Dutch are the world's tallest nation.
16. The Dutch have the highest English (as second) language proficiency in world.
17. It is one of the world’s most diverse countries with one fifth of the population being foreign born.
