My Dad is Hungarian and so, as a European, simply will not accept I don't speak French. He will send me articles from Le Monde that I can't read until the end of time. He, of course, speaks 7 languages. Growing up British is a scam isn't it.
Absolutely love that this lighthearted tweet is offending some white British ppl. Babe, well done on speaking Esperanto or whatever - of course British people can learn languages, & indeed many are bilingual or multi-lingual!
My point is literally that language education in this country is awful. If you don't have multilingual parents then you have to go and do the hard work on your own. My Dad assumes I speak French because he assumes that the British state would simply make sure that I do.
He doesn't realise how little value languages other than English are given here. Ofc many challenge this & go and learn, or share the languages they grew up with, but I wish that the education system treated it as more crucial.
