There are two distinct types of careers:

- One where the payoff follows a normal distribution (doctor, programmer, plumber, architect).

- The other where the payoff follows a Pareto distribution (musician, author, startup founder, youtuber).

...
If you (or your kids) want to pursue the Pareto career, you can’t treat it the same as a normal career.

Unlike a normal career, you can’t rely on focus and hard work to make ends meet with a Pareto career. It’s extremely competitive, random, and highly unpredictable.
To make a living with the Pareto career, you must behave like a venture capitalist, a book publisher, or a major film studio. You must have a portfolio of enough things such that you can expect a few payoffs to happen regularly. Go all in on one thing at your peril.
