Just got an update from a homelessness charity I volunteer with, and apparently they've had to accommodate multiple young women who've withdrawn from emergency hostels due to an "immediate risk to their safety." This is because those hostels have mixed facilities now.
I hope I'm not being indiscreet by sharing this, obviously I can't go into details about who/where this is. I'm just fuming. How many times have I been told that single-sex spaces don't matter?
There are so many factors that contribute to homelessness and then women have the further barrier of not being able to access services put in place to help them, simply because no one has CONSIDERED that women are at risk of male violence. How does that happen?
I should clarify that I don't know WHY these hostels are mixed, or whether the men who posed a risk to the women in this case were trans-identified. I don't want to present this as specifically caused by self-ID when I have no idea if that's the case.
What it does illustrate is the the indifference of policymakers to women's needs, esp our need for single sex spaces. It's that same indifference which makes it possible for Labour MPs to support self-ID unquestioningly, and for self-ID to gain so much traction generally.
